Plumbing Licence Check NSW: How to Verify Before You Book

Anyone can print a van sticker. A plumbing licence check NSW homeowners can do in about a minute is the only way to know whether the person quoting is allowed to do the work at all. It is free, it is public, and most people never do it.

How do you check a plumber’s licence in NSW?

Through the Service NSW licence check, which searches the public register. It covers the licences required for plumbing, draining and gasfitting work, along with residential building, wiring, air conditioning and refrigeration.

What do you need to search with?

Any one of several details. A licence number is quickest. Failing that you can search on the licensee’s name, the licence type, an ABN or ACN, or a location by suburb, postcode or local government area. So a business card with a name and a suburb on it is enough to start. You can also do an ABN lookup via the Australian Business Register (ABR) website.

What does the result actually tell you?

Whether a valid contractor licence exists, and in what form. Two parts of the result matter more than the rest.

The licence class

Plumbing, draining and gasfitting are separate authorisations. Someone licensed for plumbing is not automatically licensed for gas work. If the job involves a cooktop, a heater or a gas hot water unit, the gas side has to appear on the licence.

The status and any conditions

A licence can sit as current, expired, suspended or cancelled. It can also carry conditions limiting what the holder may do. An expired licence is not a technicality. Work done under one is unlicensed work.

What if they cannot give you a number?

Treat that as the answer. A licensed contractor knows the number and hands it over without hesitation. In NSW a licence or certificate is required for any plumbing, draining or gasfitting work, whatever the job costs and whether the property is residential, commercial or industrial. There is no small-job exemption to fall back on.

Why does the licence matter this much?

Because the work sits between the drinking water and the household. Master Plumbers Australia and New Zealand puts it plainly: one unsafe connection to a household tap can contaminate the water supply to thousands of people. That is the reason the trade is licensed rather than merely accredited.

What does the training behind it involve?

Six years, on Master Plumbers’ own figure for a full plumbing qualification. Backflow prevention, gas, drainage and heated water each carry their own rules, and the licence classes reflect that. A one-week course does not produce someone who can size a gas line or set a tempering valve, the fitting that blends stored hot water down to a safe temperature at the tap.

What else is worth asking before you book?

Insurance, and whether the quote will arrive in writing. A licence proves the right to do the work. Insurance covers what happens if something goes wrong on your property. Sweeney’s plumbers are fully qualified, the business is fully insured and OH&S compliant to WorkCover requirements, and Sweeney’s belongs to Master Plumbers NSW, one of the state associations the national peak body represents.
